Japan Large-Manufacturer Confidence Hits Eight-Year High in BOJ Tankan

Confidence among Japan’s large manufacturers has reached an eight-year high in the latest BOJ Tankan survey. The improvement points to stronger business sentiment among major manufacturers as companies assess economic conditions and future activity.

Confidence among Japan's large manufacturers improved to +24 in the Bank of Japan's September Tankan survey from +22 in June, the strongest reading since 2018. Large non-manufacturer sentiment eased to +35 from +37, while companies expected conditions to soften in the December survey. The BOJ also reported that firms assumed an average dollar-yen rate of 154.23 for fiscal 2026, up from 152.57 in June.
