Xi Expected to Press Trump to Halt U.S. Arms Sales to Taiwan

Xi Jinping is expected to press Donald Trump to halt U.S. arms sales to Taiwan during talks, according to Reuters sources.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to press U.S. President Donald Trump to halt arms sales to Taiwan during their Washington meetings this week, Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with pre-summit discussions. Beijing is expected to invoke its interpretation of the 1982 U.S.-China joint communiqué, while U.S. policy is also shaped by the Taiwan Relations Act. The reported request has not been accepted by Washington, and no change to U.S. policy on Taiwan arms sales had been confirmed at the verification cutoff.
