Denmark says a Greenland security agreement with the U.S. will give NATO broader responsibility for Arctic security while respecting sovereignty.
Denmark, Greenland and the United States are expected to sign a Greenland security agreement at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen saying NATO will share responsibility for Arctic security. The full agreement had not been made public at the review cutoff. President Donald Trump has characterised it as giving the United States permanent control over Greenland's security, while Denmark and Greenland have emphasised that the arrangement respects sovereignty. It remains unclear whether the agreement modifies the existing 1951 U.S.-Denmark defence framework.
